Children all around the world are being recruited to be child soldiers for their country. This is happening all the way from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, Myanmar, Syria, Central African Republic, Sudan, South Sudan, and Colombia. The majority of these kids are being stripped of their homes and families and are being brainwashed to do as a general tells them to. Children soldiers are being forced to do terrible things that they cannot control which therefore, makes the child soldiers victims of the situation.

The civil rights movement was a huge event for the United States. African Americans were thrown into a world of segregation.Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were huge advocates of the Civil Rights movement, but both had their separate ways of approaching the situation. Martin Luther King Jr. preached nonviolent civil protest, and believed that everyone should be equal. On the other hand Malcolm X still wanted society to be segregated, but did not want whites controlling anything the blacks did. He taught that violence was necessary to move beyond this problem. Martin L. King Jr. once said “But one hundred years later, the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later the life of the negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination”. “We cannot walk alone. As we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back”. The 1963 March on Washington, D.C. was to support President Kennedy’s legislation to protect the civil rights of all people, especially blacks. King, who addressed the crowd from the Lincoln Memorial, was one of the final speakers. Martin L. King was very determined to accomplish rights to everyone. In his speech he himself said “And when this happens and when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sin in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! Free at last! Thank god Almighty, we are free at last”. What we don't know is what feelings and emotions people had while Martin L. King, Jr was giving his speech, and we are unable to interpret because it was not listed, is the feeling or challenges they had against the whites while he lead the civil rights march. Malcolm X took the more violent approach to gain rights. Malcolm X used to believe that whites were devils which lead him to think that the only way to gain rights was to use violence. He stated “ the days of non violent fights were gone” this quote helps you understand how Malcolm X thinks. Even though Martin Luther King jr. and Malcolm X disagreed on a lot during the civil rights movement but also agreed on some key points. One thing they did agree on is that they wanted blacks to have the same rights as the whites and in Malcolm X opinion more rights than whites. Another thing that they agree on is they both thought that both sides would suffer from racial disagreements. The last thing they did that was similar is that they both gave speeches and protested to gain rights. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm x both believed in equal rights for everyone, but they had very different views on how it was going to be done. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that in order to get their rights, they must protest peacefully. While Malcolm x thought that they should fights for equal rights for Blacks but only after they gave two speeches that changed everything. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King were two strong men with one major goal. They did everything to gain freedom for their people, and in the end their dream came true. It took a lot of courage, determination and passion to get through this time in American History. These two men set an example of, if you work your hardest and try to find the best in the world, you can do anything. “ I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
Aidan Rendell, a survivor and miracle, has been challenged against something that people don’t often have to face.
Aidan was born September 28, 2005. He was born with congenitally small kidneys. His kidneys were not functioning properly and did not produce enough amniotic fluid for his lungs to mature in the womb. It was very high risk pregnancy. “I was placed on bed rest for months and I had to lay in certain positions that would allow enough amniotic fluid around him to breathe” said Theresa Rendell, Aidan’s mom. Aidan was born early and his lungs were very immature. He had to be intubated (lung machine) for 10 days in the NICU and given surfactant to mature his lungs. He was diagnosed with Stage 3 Kidney Disease and reduced lung function and Asthma. Aidan also had a kidney infection which scarred his kidneys further because he had Renal Reflux and required a Renal Reimplantation surgery. When he was 1 year old he also had a Mickey Button (feeding g-tube) surgically placed in his stomach because complications of his kidney disease (Renal Acidosis) made him have no appetite and he was not growing properly. He had a feeding tube and wore his little backpack for two years as a toddler. He is monitored every 3 months by his Nephrologist (Kidney doctor). He will require a kidney transplant in the future. … Aidan Rendell’s family is always trying to be as supportive as possible. He has two older brothers, one younger brother and three older sisters. All of them look out for him whenever they can. Aidan’s family has to get flu shots whenever flu season comes around to keep him healthy. Keeping him healthy also means the family takes out time and effort. Aidans family also has to remember to give him all of his medications every night which can be a challenge at times if their all busy. Haley Rendell, one of his older sisters, can remember the time Aidan had to wear the backpack and had to watch him as a baby. Aidan also has a deadly allergy. Haley remembers the time when she was four and Aidan was one and he had a peanut butter allergic reaction. “I had given him a very tiny bite of my cookie before I went to pick up Haley and her friend without knowing he was allergic to peanuts. I realized he was starting to cough a little bit but I didn't think it was anything severe” Said Theresa Rendell. Aidan and his mom then went to pick up Haley and her friend from school. Soon after Haley noticed that Aidan was coughing a lot and holding his neck showing her that he was having trouble breathing. Haley immediately told her mom who pulled over on the side of the road and noticed that this was an emergency. She immediately called 911. When they got to their house Haley remembers being told to go upstairs with her friend. A minute after Haley heard people come inside. Those people were the paramedics. She noticed they were hooking him up to machines and giving him antibiotics. After a couple of weeks we were told Aidan has a deadly allergy of peanuts. Currently Aidan goes to the Riley Children’s hospital in Indianapolis every three months for his kidney check up. He is still challenged with stage three kidney disease but is strong and battles it. He plays many sports that include the Indy Fire Soccer league and has played for a Carmel Dads Club football team in his past. Aidan works hard in school and currently is in a advanced math class. Even though he is tinier than some of the kids he plays against in the sports he plays and the people in his classes it pushes him to be a better person and good at what he does. In the future Aidan will have to have a kidney transplant. We do not know who will be donating the kidney currently which means he will need to put on the transplant list when the time comes. Aidan’s family members will also be tested in the future to see if they are also capable of donating one of their kidneys to Aidan. |
